The Hemeroteca was founded in Tarragona by the department of Modern History in the Faculty of Geography and History delegation of the University of Barcelona in 1974. The origin of the institution can be found in the efforts of a professor and a group of students who compiled periodic publications by means of free subscriptions and donations from organisations and individuals. Two years later, in February 1976, the Board of Directors of Caixa Tarragona transferred the collections accumulated by the university to the former exhibition hall of the Obra Social of Caixa Tarragona. From that moment on, the Hemeroteca has been constantly adding to the number of copies in its catalogue. In October 1979 the facility was opened on what is now Avenida President Lluís Companys, a change of location motivated by the demands of the users for more space in which to consult the collections. Since 1984, the Hemeroteca has been located at calle Mossèn Salvador Ritort i Faus 21, in order to continue offering more and improved assistance to its users.
